Thunderstick Interview on Sleazegrinder.com

For all you headbangers and horror-rock fans: Following the NWOBHM dvd review I had published back in Febuary, I have written an article/interview with the legend that is 'Thunderstick', the mad masked former Samson and Iron Maiden drummer who, along with Iron Maiden mascot "Eddie The 'Ead", remains one of the best-known icons of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

The article, published on Sleazegrinder.com, includes a detailed overview of Thunderstick's career, including some of his memories from working with the Iron Maiden and Samson guys. It also pays particular attention to Mr Stick's own band (cunningly named 'Thunderstick') and what he has been upto since, right up to the present day.

I recently got home from California after spending a week there with my lovely fiancee, Suzie. Above is a photo of us hanging out in Eruptors band merch. We spent our time around the Bay Area, including a night at the Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco (the local rock n rollers hotel, where the band Panic At The Disco were also staying). Another highlight was a trip to Monteray Bay Aquarium.

Today i played in a 7-a-side soccer tournament. It was the most fun that I have had in a while.

After a slightly disorganised first match in which my team got beat 0-2, we moved things round, stuck to our formation and drew the next two games, 0-0. i was striker in the first game but moved back to defence for the second and third, where i am much more comfortable. We were unlucky not to score as we hot the crossbar and the post several times, but our gritty determination, coolness under pressure, and general organisation meant that we didn't concede and further goals.

Unfortunately 2 draws wasn't enough to qualify us for the quater-finals, but we put up a good fight and left the competition on a high.

Middlesbrough Football Club

Some thoughts after watching that FA Cup gane against Cardiff.

The present Boro team is a shower of shit.

I support 'Middlesbrough Football Club' but not team which currently represents us.

The team in general have no passion or commitment. With their performances they insult the fans and the club and our town, they humiliate us.

Middlesbrough FC are not fit for purpose. Right now they are organised crime, robbing from the fans.

I don't know how the administration dare get on the tv/radio/newspapers every now and then, complaining about low attendences. Because when they finally get a decent sized crowd they play like that. It is appalling.

In 1986 we went bankrupt and into administration. We had a squad of about 16 professional players, average age was early 20's, with no training facilities to speak of and no pay during the Summer months whilst they prepared for the season ahead. We didn't even have a stadium to use as it was in the hands of the administrators. But that team of players put their hearts and souls into playing for this club. The players, management, administration and fans did so much so that we still had a football club. It must make them sick to watch this squad of overpaid, uncommitted pricks stroling around their brand new stadium picking up their millions then fucking off elsewhere once they get us relegated, or blowing the best chance to win the FA Cup we've had in years.

Southgate is a nice guy and could become a decent manager elsewhere, but the rot is out of control now and he won't be able to stop it. He doesn't seem to be able to motivate the players, do they even respect him? Or the fans?

Bring in Tony Mowbray to manage us, he's already proved he's got fighting spirit as a player in the 86-88 era, and with his management of Hibernian and WBA where he's had considerably less resources at his disopsal than any Boro manager in recent years.

Then build a team around Wheater and Downing and sell off the rest of those mediocre, mercenary second-raters.

COME ON BORO!!!

An Awesome Week

What a week! The Eruptors album was released on Monday, and then on Wednesday a review appeared in Kerrang! magazine (the only publication in the UK printed weekly that's dedicated to rock/metal music). I wrote about all this previously so check out in the blog entries below.

I also made a presentation in front of PhD students at university, about my research. It went very well and I was told by some oof those who attended that they found it very useful, and even the best that they had seen.

This weekend has been very productive too. Jeff sent over some work-in-progress mixes of songs that will be going on the NEXT eruptors album (we're always one step ahead!) and let me tell you, they are sounding great. A bit of tweaking needed here and there, but i know that you will love it.

Just got back from the Hanoi Rocks show, it was great! Adrenalin fuelled rock n' roll. They must have played pretty much all of the new album, plus a lot of classics, such as 'Malibu beach', 'Don't Never Leave Me', Boulevard of broken Dreams', 'Oriental beat', 'Day Late And A Dollar Short'.

Starz: Pull The Plug

Starz are a band from the 1970's who you probably haven't heard. They should have been huge, but for some reason it didn't quite take off for them. Anyway, I dig 'em and I think that you might too. BAD TIME TO BE HAVING A GOOD TIME: THE STORYLINE

Our two intrepid hero's are enjoying some well earned R&R earthside. Lieutenant Hitzberger and Rhinochaser have been putting in the hard yards at the training academy. All the fighter jocks have known that there's been something real big coming on down the pipeline and they all want to be in pole position when the commander comes looking for some flyboy aces to lead the space navy. The party is starting to kick and these two fly boys are watching each other's wings. They get some hot young targets in their sights and start to home in for the kill when some drunk guy stumbles into their path. He sees the uniforms of our two space aces. His eye's come alive with a mad energy and roars at our two hero's;

"You guys sure picked a bad time to be having a good time!"

The planet was born in a rage of fire and ice, it's warring elements simultaneously in a state of chaos and flux, order and stability. What creature born upon such a world would ever escape this memory of its creation? Whom could emerge from this dawn of the earth and walk freely in the light?

The band started to play their first number but Hitzberger and Rhinochaser had already left the party. The message had come across the net for all military personnel to report to their bases and all leave was cancelled. They didn't care, this was the call they were waiting for!

The command station was an explosion of noise and lights. There was an order to the apparent confusion though and the preparations that had been in place for time untold were coming to fruitation. Commander De'ath looked over the plan of attack one more time in his command ship although it was an unnessecery action, he knew the plans off by heart, having conceived each and every step. Soon he would be addressing not only his troops but all the people's of the human controlled worlds. His speech would be an important one.

The free people did not want to acknowledge how loose their grasp was on that freedom. Dissenting voices were shouted down and the most vigurious protest was the switching of television channels.

The SS Stanley made its last stand over 500 million light years from earth without even once coming close to the alien homeworld. Commander De'ath went down with his ship. The fighter pilots who made it off the star ship were forced to flee in to a nearby asteroid field. The alien fighters did not pursue. With their mothership destroyed the pilots would only live for a few hours till their much smaller craft's would run out of oxygen.

Hitzberger and Rhinochaser both crash-land on the same lump of rock. They know there is no chance of rescue. Their thoughts turn to home and the ones they've left behind.

Meanwhile other men prepared to do the unthinkable. The devils wings had always been only a rumour, always denied by the navy. 'Why would we make a weapon that could destroy a sun and all the planets in that system?' they said. 'Are we not a civilised people? We have no need for such a doomsday weapon.' Man in suits whispered in the ears of the men in uniform. They were given orders and expected to carry them out. The men in uniforms could only comply...

They gathered around the fires at night both for warmth and protection. Covered in the furs of the animals they had hunted, they sat hypnotised by the flames. They had named the lights in the night sky above them and worshipped the sun for it was the source of all warmth and light. They howled at each other and at the encroaching night till their energy was spent and they fell in fitful sleep. They awoke with the first light and began again the endless cycle of hunting and gathering that sustained
